Equipment
The core facility offer many different instruments. We have categorized them to give an easy overview. Click on the link below to read more about the instruments.
To make it easy we have made this overview of filter settings on all our instruments, use it to find the instrument relevant for you.
Our Flow cytometer equipment analyses all kinds of cell subsets, their DNA content, their cytokine production, turnover rate etc. Only particle size limits possible analyses as the particle must be able to pass the needle in the instrument. The needle is 70µm in diameter and in general a particle should be around 35µm.
If in doubt, contact the staff to determine your options.
- FACS Calibur
The FACS Calibur is the basic flowcytometer that new users should start at. - Fortessa (3 laser)
The LSRFortessa 3 laser offers more parameters to analyze your cells. Use this for advanced analyses. This instrument can measure 14 colors plus FSC and SSC. - CytoFLEX S (4 laser)
The CytoFLEX S 4 laser system offers a wide range of fluorescence for detection in 13 different colors plus FSC and SSC. The instrument has 7-decade display on all parameters. We have two identical instruments. - Fortessa (5 laser)
The LSRFortessa 5 laser offers even more parameters to analyze your cells. Use this when the analyses become more advanced. The instrument can measure 18 colors plus FSC and SSC. - Fortessa X20 (5 laser)
The Fortessa X20 is similar to Fortessa 5 laser in the configuration although a different technology is used in the optical bench. The instrument can measure 18 colors plus FSC and SSC, and uses DIVA software. - FACSymphony A5 (6 laser)
The FACSymphony A5 is the most hign-end instrument in our facility. I comes with a new detection technology and has detecters for 32 colors. The instrument operates with Diva sorfware.
Cell Sorters offers a wide range of sorting options in tubes, microtiter plates and slides. Except for the FACSMelody, they may only be booked and used along with the facility operator. Only a few people will accumulate enough experience to operate them on their own. Two of our sorters allows for GMO2/BSL2 sorting.
You must obtain a permit for this work, and we need to supply your information for our records.
- FACS ARIA-II
The FACS ARIA-II provide cell sorting of up to four populations simultaneously. - FACSMelody
The FACSMelody sorts in a way that allows us to train anyone that needs do-it-yourself access. This instrument is in a biosafety cabinet for GMO2 work. - Symphony S6
The Symphony S6 sorter is our largest instrument with up to 32 colors on 6 lasers. This instrument is in a biosafety cabinet for GMO2 work.
The ImageStream instrument offers the combination of flow cytometry and simple microscopy. It creates new experimental capabilities where you can combine classical flow cytometry with morphological information, like position of dye, co-localization of markers etc.
Read more about ImageStreamX Mk II at the manufacturers website
The In Vivo Imaging System offers bioluminescent and fluorescent imaging and longitudinal studies in mice.
Next generation sequencing (NGS) require several instruments and techniques to be successful in NGS. The core facility offers what is needed to make a single cell RNAseq among other things. You may need all or some of the instrument listed below, that depends on what you provides us with.
Before you book any instruments. Make sure to book a startup meeting with us, where we will go over the process to ensure we and you know what to do. You find it under booking.
The idea about the NGS lab is that people are trained, or conduct the experiments under supervision, just like booking our other instruments.
The facility provide or sell some of the reagents, but many you need to buy yourself. Talk to the staff before you start a project to get the relevant information.
- 10X Genomics Chromium Controller (run time app. 30 min)
The 10X Chromium Controller is used to generate thousands of Gel bead-in-emulsion (GEMs) droplets, enabling partitioning and barcoding of single cells, HMW DNA or nuclei, in micro reactions.
- 10X Genomics Chromium X Controller (run time app. 30 min)
The 10X Genomics Chromium X is used to generate thousands of Gel bead-in-emulsion (GEMs) droplets, enabling partitioning and barcoding of single cells or nuclei, in micro reactions. The Chromium X is the new version of their Chromium controller, enabling running the 10X high throughput kits with up to 16 samples per chip and a total of 320.000 recovered cells, without multiplexing, and 960.000 recovered cells with multiplexing per chip. In addition the Chromium X also adds support for the 10X Gene Expression Flex kit, enabling scRNASeq analysis of PFA fixed cells/nuclei or cells recovered from FFPE treated tissue samples.
- 10X Genomics Resources
On this page you can find helpful tools and calculators for planning and running sequencing experiments in the Core facility.
- BD Rhapsody (run time app. 2-3 hours)
The BD Rhapsody Single-Cell Analysis System profiles the gene expression of thousands of single cells, with predesigned or customized assays flexible enough to meet any experimental need in an efficient system that reduces experimentation time and sequencing costs.
- Agilent TapeStation 4150 (run time app. 30 min)
The Agilent Tapestation 4150 is an automated gel electrophoresis platform, for QC and analysis of both DNA and RNA.
- Biorad CFX96 Real-Time PCR (run time app. 60 min)
The Biorad CFX96 instrument is mainly used for accurate quantification of sequencing libraries, before running them on our sequencing systems.
- Invitrogen Qubit 4 Fluorometer
The Qubit 4 instrument provides and easy, fast and relatively accurate way of determining DNA and RNA concentrations by detection of fluorescent dyes, which bind specifically to the target of interest.
- Illumina Miseq
The Miseq is our budget friendly benchtop sequencing system, which is typically used when a relatively small output is needed ex. Amplicon sequencing or whole genome sequencing of small genomes (Bacteria, virus etc.).
- Illumina NovaSeq 6000
The NovaSeq 6000 is our largest sequencing system, both in terms of output and size. It is very flexible as it offers four different flow cell types (SP, S1, S2 and S4) with a wide range of outputs and prices.

- 10X Visium Spatial Gene Expression
Visium Spatial Gene Expression is a next-generation molecular profiling solution for classifying tissue based on total mRNA. Map the whole transcriptome with morphological context in FFPE or fresh-frozen tissues to discover novel insights into normal development, disease pathology, and clinical translational research.
10X has made a short video of how it work which you can see here https://www.10xgenomics.com/products/spatial-gene-expression
